John Boyega Visits St Michael’s
‘The Force’ was strong at St Michael’s in late February when students of Media Studies and Drama were treated to a surprise visit from British actor John Boyega. The star of ‘Attack The Block’, ‘Detroit’, ‘Pacific Rim’ and the recent ‘Star Wars’ trilogy came to talk to students about his journey into acting, experiences of the British and American film industries and careers in acting and film. Students learned much about the diverse roles available in the creative and entertainment industries, auditioning for screen roles, the importance of his upbringing and the value of faith in his life. After fielding questions from pupils and staff, John was given a short presentation about the ‘Mule’ film project that students and staff at the school have been undertaking, before kindly participating in numerous photo opportunities. We really look forward to working more closely with John Boyega in the future in supporting the valuable outreach work he has begun with local schools in Southwark. Here’s what some of our students thought of the event:
“It was a privilege to meet such a high-profile actor. Boyega’s talk really inspired me to look further into the film industry” Ricky Obaseki
“I was inspired to think more about working in the film industry in the future” Darcy Scott
“To be able to connect to him as a person was very inspiring. The fact that he comes from the same area as I do just pushes me to work harder to achieve my goals in life.” Michael Odutayo
“A once-in-a-lifetime experience for me. Thank you!” Nikoletta Varga
“It was an eye-opening experience, I’m beyond thankful to take on his advice for my own career.” Devonte Sackity
